The selling point for daylight saving time has always been, you know, savings.Historically speaking, that meant saving on candle wax, or coal, or oil for your lamp.Nowadays, those aren't really things.Hence the question: Does daylight saving time really produce savings? The answer: Maybe not so much."I know of no credible study that has documented any savings whatsoever in energy from adopting daylight saving time", William Shughart, an economist at Utah State University, told USA Today."As far as I can tell, all of the effects of daylight saving time are costs," he said.By most accounts, it was Ben Franklin who cooked up the idea in 1784 that people can save money on candles by shifting their schedules to maximize sunshine.Germany took that advice to heart as a wartime measure in 1916. And America followed suit in 1918 and again during World War II.Our modern system of daylight saving was adopted in 1966.Congress and the Nixon administration toyed with ending the time shifts during ...New Report Covers Racial Disparities in Crime and Policing

The Sentencing Project has released its latest report on racial disparities in policing in America. The report is called One in Five: Disparities in Crime and Policing. The report is another example of the longtime criminal justice reform advocates at The Sentencing Project pushing for reform. In its eyes, the battle is over effective and humane responses to crime that minimize imprisonment and criminalization of youth and adults by promoting racial, ethnic, economic and gender justice. The report’s title is based on the “generational shift” as the authors described it that saw one in three Black men born in 1981 likely to see imprisonment drop to one in five in 2001. Some of the report’s biggest takeaways included Black Americans were 9.3 times as likely as whites to be homicide victims in 2020, American Indians were 4.3 times as likely, and Latinxs were 1.9 times as likely, based on age-adjusted figures. The authors noted homicide is generally an intra-racial crime, these fig...Rider Dies in Motorcycle Crash on Oro Quincy Highway [Berry Creek, CA]

By Fatima Hussein, Patrick Whittle and Colleen Long | Associated PressLEWISTON, Maine — President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden stood for a moment of silence and placed a bouquet of white flowers at a makeshift memorial outside Schemengees Bar and Grille, one of the scenes of the state’s deadliest mass shooting.Biden then bent to hug Kathy Lebel, owner of the bar where eight people died in the Oct. 25 massacre. Seven more died at the nearby Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, three others at hospitals.Biden came to Lewiston on Friday for what presidents do in these moments of horror and grief: Lend comfort to the families of the victims and show support for a reeling community. It’s a trip that has become all too familiar, despite a bipartisan gun safety law passed last year after another mass shooting, and despite a series of executive orders by the president meant to curb gun violence.“Jill and I have done too many of these,” Biden said outside the bowling all...Bay Point shooting victim and driver who died in Cummings Skyway crash after pursuit both were under 18
