Jordan Addison, a Maryland native who excelled at Tuscarora High School in Frederick, was selected with the No. 23 overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in Thursday night’s NFL draft.Just one pick after the Ravens selected fellow receiver Zay Flowers, the Vikings grabbed Addison, who excelled for two college programs over the past few years. Addison racked up 1,593 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in 2021 at Pittsburgh and added 875 receiving yards and eight scores at Southern California in 2022.Addison did not excel at the NFL combine in March, but that didn’t seem to matter too much as he was the fourth wide receiver selected overall. Earlier this year, Pro Football Focus described Addison “as NFL-ready as it gets” and The Draft Network called him “among the most refined” prospects in the class.“The biggest thing that pops with Addison is just how dynamic his play is before he gathers the football,” The Draft Network’s scoutin...Dear Abby: Brother lives nearby, but won’t visit mom

Dear Abby: Our mom just turned 100, and she is in good health. I threw a big birthday celebration to honor this amazing woman. My brother and I were adopted as infants. She gave us a fabulous childhood, and we grew up to be responsible adults. My brother, who’s retired, lives 6 miles from Mom, but he never goes to see her or offers any type of help he is capable of doing. He thinks a daily phone call is enough. He didn’t even show up to her birthday party. I live 40 miles from Mom. I leave early for work to spend time with her each morning. My brother and I do not talk, so how do I get the point across that he needs to spend TIME with her? If I mention it to Mom, she constantly makes excuses for his behavior. What can I do? — Frustrated Sister in ArizonaDear Sister: Although you and your brother were raised by the same woman, you are two different individuals. The pattern of how your brother treats Mom has been established, and because there is little time left, it i...Deonte Banks, a Baltimore native and the No. 24 pick by New York Giants, grew up with ‘a village behind him’

Deonte Banks excelled for the University of Maryland for the past four years and figures to soon play a prominent role for the New York Giants. The athletic, physical cornerback was selected by the Giants with the No. 24 overall pick in Thursday’s NFL draft. But Banks, who was born in Baltimore and grew up in Edgewood, can trace his path to the sport’s pinnacle through a barbershop in East Baltimore. From when he was 8 years old until he was 13, Banks played for the Parkside Warriors on teams that won three youth national football titles, according to coach Dennis Harding. One of the team’s assistant coaches was a barber, and the players often lifted weights one winter in the back of the barbershop where he worked.Banks went on to be a three-star college recruit out of Edgewood High School and bounced back from a shoulder injury at Maryland to be an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick this past season. Soon, he will be an NFL player.“Amazing. I’m just so p...Instant analysis of Ravens taking WR Zay Flowers in first round of NFL draft

Here’s what The Baltimore Sun staff had to say immediately after the Ravens selected Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night.Childs Walker, reporter: Lamar Jackson’s big day continues with the Ravens adding another dynamic target for their franchise quarterback in Zay Flowers. Flowers is on the small side, but he’s a deep threat from the slot who produced despite the fact he was surrounded by mediocre talent at Boston College. Teams raved about his character and work ethic throughout the predraft process. The Ravens still need a young starter at cornerback and could’ve had one in Joey Porter Jr. or Deonte Banks, but they chose to keep building a high-octane attack around their quarterback. It’s hard to argue with that thinking.Mike Preston, columnist: Zay Flowers is what this offense needs: a speed guy. He is small, but can absolutely fly. He is a good complement to wide...Bodycam video shows shooting involving deputy in North County

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego City Attorney on Thursday filed a lawsuit against the owners of the California Theatre for creating a public nuisance. The building has sat vacant for decades and drew in the wrong kind of attention. The city attorney said the lawsuit is the last resort to make the building and the area around it a safe place."Patience has worn thin because it's now health and safety. James Corden used part of his farewell speech on Thursday’s final episode of CBS’ “ The Late Late Show” to address the deep rift in America over hot button issues including politics and ideology.“We started this show with Obama, then Trump and a global pandemic. I’ve watched America change a lot. I’ve watched divisions grow and I’ve felt a sense of negativity boil over,” said the host. He implored his audience to “remember what America signifies to the rest of the world. My entire life it has always been a place of optimism. … Yes, it has flaws but show me a place that doesn’t. Show me a person that doesn’t.“Just because somebody disagrees with you it doesn’t make them bad or evil. We are all more the same than we are different. NEW YORK — Shares advanced in Asia on Friday after Wall Street rallied to its best day since January. Gains in Asian markets were more modest as traders waited to see what the Bank of Japan would do in its first policy meeting since Kazuo Ueda took the helm. The central bank kept its ultra-lax policy unchanged, and the Japanese yen weakened sharply against the U.S. dollar. The dollar rose to 134.92 yen from 133.96 yen earlier in the day. “With extremely high uncertainties surrounding economies and financial markets at home and abroad, the bank will patiently continue with monetary easing while nimbly responding to developments,” the BOJ said in a statement. Rising prices are putting pressure on the central bank to tighten its ultra-lax monetary policy: Japan reported inflation excluding volatile fresh food costs was at 3.5% in March. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index added 1.1% to 28,764.98 and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong gained 0.6% to 19,951.51. The Shanghai Composite index surged 0.7...Latest news
